Caring for Full-Grain Leather
Five habits that keep leather looking new, and three things that quietly ruin it.
Full-grain leather is skin. Treat it like skin and it lasts decades.
Do this
- Store it stuffed. Use the tissue or paper that came with the bag so the
shape holds. Never store it flat or folded. - Use the dust bag. Light and dust dry leather out faster than anything else.
- Wipe after rain. Blot with a dry cloth and let it air dry away from heat.
- Condition twice a year. A small amount of neutral leather cream, worked in
with a soft cloth, replaces oils lost to dry air. - Rotate your bags. Leather needs a day to recover between wears.
Don’t do this
- Don’t use wet wipes, hand sanitiser, or household cleaners — they strip the finish.
- Don’t put leather next to a radiator or in direct sunlight. It will crack and fade.
- Don’t overfill. Stretching a bag permanently distorts the base and the handles.
Scuffs on full-grain leather often disappear with a fingertip and a little warmth from your
hand. Small marks are part of how the leather ages.
